Preparing for a Procedure
Five Days Prior to Procedure
Stop Taking blood-thinning medications including Plavix, Coumadin, Aspirin, Motrin, Nuprin, Advil, Alka-Seltzer, Vitamin E and Ginkgo Biloba, etc. Tylenol is permitted. Stop taking iron and iron containing vitamins. No nuts or seeds and discontinue fiber supplements such as Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, etc.

Colyte (GoLytely or TriLyte) Colonoscopy Preparation
Split Dose
Five Days Prior to Procedure:
Stop taking blood-thining medications including Plavix, Coumadin, Aspirin, Motrin, Nuprin, Advil, Alka-Seltzer, Vitamin E and Ginkgo Biloba, etc. Tylenol is permitted. Stop takin iron and iron containing vitamins. No nuts or seeds and discontinue fiber supplements such as Metamucil, Citrucel, Benefiber, etc.
Day Before Colonoscopy:
Take your usual prescription medications. If you have Diabetes: You should take your diabetic medications at ½ the usual dose. Monitor your blood sugar at your usual times.
Prepare contents of Colyte bottle with (1) Flavor pack into one gallon of water. Shake the solution until powder dissolves and refrigerate until ready to use.
Breakfast: Begin a clear liquid diet and remain on it all day. Make sure none of the liquids are colored red or purple.
A Clear Liquid Diet (any liquid you can see a light bulb through) consists of:
Soups: Clear Bouillon, chicken broth, vegetable broth, beef broth, or consommé
Beverages: Tea, Coffee (no milk/cream) only sugar, sodas, Gatorade (NO red, blue, or purple colors), water
Juices: Apple, white grape, lemonade, limeade, orange, and any clear juice without pulp
Desserts: Italian ices, Popsicles, Jell-O, and hard candy (No reds, blue or purple)
AT NOON: Take the 20mg. of Dulcolax Laxative (Tablets 5mg each, all at once)
AT 4PM: Start drinking the Colyte or as soon as you arrive home from work until half way done.
4 hours before leaving your home continue drinking the solution until completely consumed. Bowel movements will continue until about 2 hours after you finish drinking the last glass. Feeling of bloating, abdominal fullness and nausea are common because of the large volume of fluid ingested. These feelings are temporary and should subside shortly after the bowel movements begin.
Day of Colonoscopy:
You may have clear liquids until 4 hours prior to your schedule arrival time. Please take your heart or blood pressure medications early in the morning with a small amount of water. Please do not take diabetic medication on the day of your procedure. Insulin patients may take ½ the usual dose.
Someone must accompany to drive and assist you home.
Do not plan any social activities or return to work the day of the procedure.
